Dieses Buch thematisiert Gewalt, Missbrauch und Verletzung, die Kinder und Jugendliche in Einrichtungen von SOS-Kinderdorf erfahren haben. Horst Schreiber analysiert strukturelle Momente in der Geschichte dieser Organisation, die Repression und Gewalt möglich gemacht haben. Das mit der Gründung der Organisation eingeführte Betreuungskonzept stellte eine familiale Situation mit der traditionellen Hierarchie der Geschlechter nach. Der Dorfleiter repräsentierte die väterliche Ordnung und Sanktionsgewalt, die Kinderdorf-Mütter sollten mit ihrer Fürsorge eine heilende Kraft für das verlassene Kind darstellen.
Auch wenn sich die Fremdunterbringung im SOS-Kinderdorf positiv von der Form des Heimes und der Pflegefamilie unterschied, so zeigt sich dennoch, dass zahlreiche Kinder erfahren mussten, ein zweites Mal "aus dem Nest" zu fallen. Zum Schutz seines guten Rufes war SOS-Kinderdorf bei sexualisierter Gewalt gegen Kinder und Jugendliche lange Zeit um Geheimhaltung bemüht. Viele Anzeichen für Missbrauch wurden systematisch ignoriert.
