Bangs and Kallen inpendently visited areas to the West and East of Bali, the archetypal paradise located almost dead centre in the Indonesian Archipelago. Bangs explored Bali and territories to the West, the "islands of fire", where his adventures included rafting the wild Alas River in Sumatra; climbing three volcanoes in Java - including legendary Krakatau; dancing with descendants of headhunters in Kalimantran (Borneo) and hiking along the coastline of Southern Bali. Kallen visited the "island of spice". He recounts travelling to a traditional Toraja funeral in Sulawesi; sailing the islands of Nusa Tenggara and Maluku; and stepping back into the Stone Age in Irian Jaya (New Guinea).
